MRE FRH Flameless Ration Heaters, sold in 12-packs

These MRE heating units will make your MREs piping hot in a few minutes using only a little water! But note that MREs don't require cooking. We are offering MRE heaters as an easy way to have an occasional hot meal during a disaster, and could also be used to heat your own food if packaged right.

The flameless ration heaters heat food to at least 100° F quickly and safely without fire, making them extremely useful when fire or is prohibited or not recommended.

  • Simple and easy to use
  • Lightweight and easily storable
  • Non-toxic, biodegradable, and disposable with regular household trash
  • Chemical pad composed of magnesium, iron, and sodium chloride

How Do MRE Heaters Work?

MRE Flameless Ration Heaters are used to heat food rations for NASA and U.S. Military MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). These magnesium heaters provide a simple a safe method for quickly heating food with little risk of fire or explosion.

MRE Flameless Ration Heaters contain heating pads made from a supercorrodible magnesium-iron alloy in a porous matrix formed from polymeric powders with sodium chloride incorporated with it or in a separate tablet.

To activate heat, water is added to the heater bag to activate the heating pad. The water dissolves the sodium chloride into an electrolyte solution causing magnesium and iron to function as an anode and cathode, respectively. An exothermic oxidation-reduction reaction between the magnesium-iron alloy and water to produce magnesium hydroxide, hydrogen gas and heat:

Mg + 2H2O --- Mg(OH)2 + H2 + Heat

To ensure that the reaction doesn't prematurely occur while in storage, the heater bag containing the heating pad must be protected from punctures or tears, avoiding water and moist air. If the heating pad itself is exposed to moist air at any time, its surface may become coated with a thin layer of insoluble magnesium hydroxide, which will hinder future chemical reactions. Heater pads that become wet in storage release hydrogen gas and can create a serious fire or explosion hazard that may ignite the very hot burning magnesium.

Due to hazardous materials classification, MRE Flameless Ration Heaters CANNOT be shipped via USPS Priority Mail, or via UPS 2nd Day or Next Day Air shipping methods.

How to Use MRE Heaters

  • Tear off the top of the MRE Heater Bag.
  • Place your MRE entree (or anything else that is water tight and needs to be heated) into the bag.
  • Pour a small amount of water (a couple of tablespoons) into the bag until the water reaches somewhere between the water line marks near the bottom of the heater bag.
  • Then hold the heater level for a minute so the chemicals in the heater pad soak up the water.
  • Fold the top of the bag over the MRE.
  • Prop up the bag holding your MRE (or other item) using a rock or other item to keep your Heater Bag on a slight incline, and the heat is on!
  • After 10-15 minutes, the contents are piping hot!

IMPORTANT: Follow all instructions and heed all warnings printed on the bag!
