By special request, we went for it! Another "Will It Freeze Dry?" video — the Freeze Dried Pizza Challenge — and some Babybel Mini Gouda Cheese in our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer.
We took the challenge. We used three different pre-cooked pizzas in the freeze dryer. All three were thin crust style, store-bought pizzas — the CHEAP kind (in our family we call these "cardboard pizza")!
1) Our first pizza was the Margherita Pizza with gluten-free crust made with Ancient Grains topped with Roma Tomatoes, Basil, Mozzarella and Provolone. This one turned out hard as a rock and we feared someone would break a tooth! We even tried to steam it to soften up the texture, but that just didn't cut it.
2) The second was a Vegetarian Pizza with Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, and Onions. This was the absolute winner. We will definitely do this one again. (AKA the BEST Pizza Chips EVER!)
3) The third pizza was a Pizza Pollo with Chicken, Spinach, and Tomatoes (from the same brand and crust style as the Vegetarian). Although it was good as a "pizza chip" we also tried the steam method on this one which, again, didn't work out so well.
As an added bonus, we also freeze dried some sliced Babybel Mini Gouda cheese. The cheese was fun in freeze dried form ("cookie-like"). We also tried to rehydrate the cheese in room temperature water and eventually gave up after two hours. We also tried to steam it for 1/2 hour without any success.
All in all we were thrilled with the results. We may have just created the next snack craze: Freeze Dried Pizza Chips!
