Here is a short video where we freeze dried a batch of Bay Shrimp in our Harvest Right home freeze dryer. We used about 6 lbs of bay shrimp for this batch. Once the freeze drying process was complete, the freeze dried shrimp was separated into four (4) 1-lb Mylar bags and sealed for storage.
After about two weeks, we rehydrated some of the shrimp and made Bay Shrimp Salads for lunch!
The shrimp rehydrated in just a few minutes, and most of us were very happy with the texture and flavor of the freeze dried shrimp, although Jenny thought they were "slimy" (perhaps she didn't like the texture?).
The little bay shrimps came in a big frozen 6 lb bag from a local restaurant/food service market. The cost of the bag that made four (4) trays of shrimp was about $30. We used the equivalent of one tray in the video, about $7.50 worth. Not bad at all! And, yes, we would do this again without hesitation.
